Mock Exam Strategy: How to Use Practice Tests for Maximum Exam Readiness

Mock exams are the single most predictive tool for exam readiness. But using them wrong can give you a false sense of confidence or unnecessary anxiety.
Practice Questions vs Mock Exams
When to Take Mock Exams
Too early = demoralizing. If you haven't covered all domains, a low score might discourage you.
Too late = no time to fix gaps. If you take your first mock exam 2 days before the real exam, you can't address weaknesses.
The ideal schedule:
Mock 1: 3 weeks before exam date (diagnostic — identifies weak areas)
Mock 2: 2 weeks before exam date (progress check after targeted study)
Mock 3: 1 week before exam date (final confidence builder)
How to Take a Mock Exam
Create Real Exam Conditions
Find a quiet space with no interruptions
Set a timer for exactly 4 hours (for CISA/CISM/CRISC)
No phone, no notes, no breaks beyond what the real exam allows
Use a computer (not printed questions) to simulate the testing interface
During the Exam
Read each question completely before looking at answers
Flag questions you're unsure about — come back after finishing
Don't change answers unless you have a specific reason
Pace yourself: check every 50 questions that you're on track timewise
How to Analyze Results
The score itself matters less than what it reveals. After each mock:
Step 1: Review Every Wrong Answer
Understand WHY the correct answer is correct
Identify whether you got it wrong because of a knowledge gap or misreading
Note which domain each wrong answer belongs to
Step 2: Identify Patterns
Are you consistently weak in one domain?
Are you losing points to time pressure (rushing at the end)?
Are you falling for distractor answers on "FIRST" or "BEST" questions?
Step 3: Create a Targeted Study Plan
Spend 80% of remaining time on weak domains
Practice similar question types to your common mistakes
Use flashcards for concepts you keep getting wrong
Score Benchmarks
Note: Mock exam difficulty varies by source. A 70% on a well-designed mock typically translates to a passing score on the real exam.
